Use a stiff/sturdy paper that can tolerate frequent handling. This is where you can demonstrate individuality with a border you create on your computer or buy paper with an attractive border already on the paper. A really memorable book may also be created by grandchildren or great-grandchildren coloring a special border.
The Life Story Book is set to print with margins of 1.25 “ on the right and left sides, and 1.0” on the top and bottom.
Use a dark colored pen, printing words clearly.
Write the person’s name on the cover.
If the elder has dementia, remember they can read for many years after diagnosis, so write in short simple sentences.
The page of guidelines is not meant to be included in the finished book. These are just suggestions; the finished book will be highly individualized.
There is a page included that is just lines, you are encouraged to make as many copies of this page as you need and include under headings where you have much to say.
Make a copy of the book when finished. The book when copied will also make very nice gifts to family and friends.
The final page is for posting in the elder’s room. Many copies may be made of this, and you are encouraged to change it frequently.
Remember a Life Story Book can provide opportunities for reminiscing, provide a connection between the past and the present, and provide an enjoyable way to pass the time. It gives the elder an opportunity to give back, increase self esteem and reinforce identity. The Life Story Book increases feelings of well being and when read by the caregiver, provides the caregiver with the information to give back to the elder the life they may be forgetting. It provides the caregiver with an insight into the elder’s life and achievements, while promoting care with dignity. Reading the Life Story Book to the elder provides the elder with the comfort of being taken care of by someone who knows them.
Enjoy and The Lord bless you and keep you,
